Where to Stay in Cortona: Hotels, B&Bs and Agriturismos
Where to stay in Cortona depends on what kind of visit you’re planning. The historic centre is compact enough that almost anywhere inside the walls puts you within easy walking distance of everything — but the choice of accommodation ranges from grand historic hotels to quiet agriturismos in the surrounding countryside. Here’s what you need to know.
Staying Inside the Historic Centre
If it’s your first time in Cortona, staying inside the walls is the right choice. You’ll wake up to the sound of church bells, step directly into the medieval streets, and have restaurants, museums, and views on your doorstep. Parking requires some planning, but most hotels can help arrange it.

Where to Stay in Cortona: Our Top Pick — Hotel San Michele
If we had to recommend one place to stay in Cortona, it would be Hotel San Michele. Housed in the 15th-century Baldelli Palace — a building listed as a National Monument by the Italian Ministry of Art — it sits right in the heart of the historic centre, just steps from Piazza della Repubblica and the MAEC Museum.
The hotel has 40 rooms, each decorated differently with antique furniture and modern comforts. The breakfast room occupies what was once the main hall of the Etruscan Heritage Academy — a detail that tells you everything about the kind of place this is. There’s also a hidden 15th-century fresco tucked away in a quiet corner of the hotel, attributed to the circle of Bicci di Lorenzo.
Guests consistently praise the location, the staff, and the breakfast buffet — a generous spread of Italian, continental and American options served in a genuinely beautiful room.
What we like: The most central hotel in Cortona. Historic character without sacrificing comfort. Staff who know the town well and can point you in the right direction.
Good to know: Parking is available (€30/night) — a genuine advantage in a pedestrianised historic centre where most hotels can’t offer this. Book ahead in summer.

Other Options in the Historic Centre
Hotel Italia Cortona — A 13th-century mansion with a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views over the Val di Chiana and Lake Trasimeno. A strong alternative if San Michele is fully booked.
B&B San Francesco — A smaller, more intimate option in a historic building with a garden. Good for those who prefer a quieter, more personal atmosphere.
Staying in the Countryside
If you’re travelling by car and want space, tranquillity, and a quintessential Tuscan experience, an agriturismo in the hills around Cortona is hard to beat. You’ll typically get a converted farmhouse, olive groves, a pool, and sweeping views — and Cortona is just 10–15 minutes away.
The area around Cortona has several excellent agriturismos, particularly along the road toward Ossaia and in the hills above Camucia. We’ll be publishing a dedicated guide to agriturismos near Cortona soon.
Practical Tips for Booking
Book early for summer. Cortona’s best hotels fill up fast between June and August. If you’re visiting in peak season, book at least 2–3 months in advance.
Check the parking situation. Most of the historic centre is a ZTL (restricted traffic zone). If you’re arriving by car, make sure your hotel can advise on parking before you arrive.
Consider mid-week stays. Cortona gets busy on weekends, particularly in summer. Mid-week stays are often quieter and sometimes cheaper.

Insider Tip
Whatever you book, ask for a room with a view if one is available. Cortona sits on a hilltop with extraordinary sightlines over the Val di Chiana toward Lake Trasimeno — waking up to that view on a clear morning is one of the great simple pleasures of visiting this town.
