Private Transfer vs Taxi — What’s the Difference?

A private transfer (in Italy known as NCC — noleggio con conducente) is a pre-booked car or van with a driver, arranged in advance for a specific journey. Unlike a taxi, an NCC cannot be flagged down on the street — it’s booked ahead of time, and the price is agreed before you travel.

Taxis, by contrast, operate on a meter and can be hailed or called on the day. For visitors flying into a major airport or arriving with heavy luggage, a private transfer generally offers a more predictable, comfortable experience — a driver waiting for you by name, with no need to find a taxi rank on arrival.

⚠️ Transportation Strike Alert (Sciopero)

  • Sept 7-17: The Perugia-Terontola train line has reopened after summer works, but slower service and some replacement buses continue through Sept 17.
  • Sept 5-Oct 31: Ongoing maintenance on the Florence-Rome mainline train route (the Camucia-Cortona stop) is causing schedule changes and slightly longer travel times in both directions.
  • Sept 7-8: A 24-hour national rail strike is planned (9:18pm Sept 7 to about 9:00pm Sept 8). Some guaranteed minimum service usually runs 6-9am and 6-9pm.
  • Sept 26: A national multi-sector strike is planned; exact hours not yet published, but some rail disruption is expected.
