When to Visit Cortona: The Complete Seasonal Guide
When to visit Cortona is one of the most common questions we hear — and the honest answer is: it depends on what you’re looking for. Cortona is beautiful in every season, but each time of year offers a very different experience. Here’s what you need to know to choose the best time for your visit.
Spring (April–June): The Best All-Round Time
Spring is widely considered the best time to visit Cortona. The weather is warm but not oppressive, the hillsides are green, wildflowers are blooming, and the town hasn’t yet filled with the peak-season crowds.
April and May are particularly magical. The light in Tuscany at this time of year is extraordinary — golden and soft — and you’ll find the restaurants, hotels and streets pleasantly busy without being overwhelming.
June is still excellent, though temperatures begin to climb and visitor numbers increase toward the end of the month. Book accommodation early if you’re visiting in June.
Insider tip: June brings Cortona Comics — one of Italy’s most beloved comic and pop culture festivals. July brings Cortona On The Move, an internationally acclaimed photography festival. Both are worth planning your trip around.
Summer (July–August): Busy, Hot and Festive
Summer is peak season in Cortona. The town fills with visitors — particularly in August — and temperatures regularly exceed 35°C. That said, Cortona’s hilltop position means it’s almost always a few degrees cooler than the valley below, and evenings are reliably pleasant.
July is busy but manageable. The long days mean you can explore early morning or late evening when the heat eases and the crowds thin. Cortona in the early morning, before the day-trippers arrive, is something special.
August is the busiest and hottest month. Ferragosto (15 August) is a national holiday and the town can feel very crowded. Some local businesses close for part of the month. Book everything well in advance if you’re visiting in August.
Insider tip: Arrive early, stay late. The magic of Cortona in summer happens before 10am and after 7pm. The midday hours are best spent in a shaded restaurant or a cool museum.
Autumn (September–October): The Hidden Gem Season
Autumn is arguably the most underrated time to visit Cortona. The summer crowds have gone, the temperatures are comfortable, and the landscape turns extraordinary shades of gold and amber.
September is excellent — warm, less crowded than summer, and the harvest season brings a bounty of local produce to the markets and restaurants. Truffles, mushrooms, chestnuts, and the grape harvest make this a paradise for food lovers.
October is cooler and quieter still. Some businesses begin to reduce their hours toward the end of the month, but the town is far from closed. The light in October is stunning for photography.
Insider tip: The Sagra della Bistecca (Steak Festival) takes place in mid-August, but the real food event of the year is the autumn harvest season — visit a local winery or truffle market if you can.
Winter (November–March): Quiet and Authentic
Winter in Cortona is a very different experience — and one that some visitors prefer above all others. The tourists are almost entirely gone, the town returns to its residents, and you get a glimpse of authentic local life that simply doesn’t exist in summer.
November and February can be cold, grey and rainy, but there are also clear, crisp days with extraordinary views over the valley. Many restaurants and shops reduce their hours or close for a period, so it’s worth checking ahead.
December brings Christmas markets and festive atmosphere to the main piazzas. A warm coat and the right expectations make winter Cortona genuinely rewarding.
Insider tip: If you want to experience Cortona like a local — eat where locals eat, walk streets that are actually quiet — come in March. The town is waking up from winter, most businesses are open, and you’ll have the historic centre almost to yourself.
